This application note describes in detail the experimental setup and procedures for characterizing an edge-emitting quantum-dash Fabry-Perot (QD-FP) laser for optical clock recovery applications.
The application note also discusses the limitations of using an unpackaged laser and a micro-positioning stage to align a tapered fibre to the laser, and compares test results for an unpackaged laser to those of a packaged laser, as provided by CMC’s packaging and assembly competition service. Accurate and reliable measurement results are demonstrated for the packaged laser for all-optical clock recovery applications.
Although the characterization techniques discussed in this document are specific to using the laser for clock recovery, they also illustrate general considerations for characterizing an edge-emitting laser.
