This application note describes a compact fluorescence detection/imaging system for detecting biological materials. By vertically stacking an optical filter on a CMOS image sensor array, the system eliminates the cumbersome optical components (e.g.; discrete lenses and filters) traditionally used in fluorescence detection systems. It is intended for applications that can tolerate a trade-off in spacial resolution, but cannot tolerate the size and weight of conventional optical components and biochemical analysis kits.
